On Monday July 22 2024, the Climate Clock will tick down below five years for the first time, a key milestone for humanity that will spark a wave of synchronised actions around the world, demanding an end to fossil fuels, and pushing leaders to #ActInTime to accelerate real climate solutions.
On this day, we will officially have 4 YEARS to dramatically reduce fossil fuel emissions to stay below 1.5C degrees warming. Every minute, every second counts. Actions will be taking place in over 2 dozen countries.
A CALL TO ACTION
Leveraging the momentum from last year's successes, communities worldwide are rallying around CED2024 with two key messages: it’s TIME TO END FOSSIL FUELS and STOP CLIMATE CRIMINALS
GLOBAL:
TIME TO END FOSSIL FUELS
- Stop all new fossil fuel projects: from the Mountain Valley and LNG pipelines in the USA to EACOP in East Africa, governments and banks must stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry and redirect those funds towards renewable energy and climate adaptation measures.
- A renewable future: through investments, incentives, and supportive policies that include not only workers and communities reliant on fossil fuel industries but also focusing on transforming economies to ensure equitable opportunities, sustainable livelihoods, and resilience in the face of climate change impacts.
- Finance real climate solutions: from Renewable Energy to Regenerative Agriculture, from mitigation to adaptation, on July 22 people-power movements will be pressuring governments to commit the financial resources behind the solutions we need.
- Combat false solutions: Call out the fake, time-wasting distractions being proposed by corporations and governments that allow continued fossil fuel expansion.
USA:
#STOPCLIMATECRIMINALS
- New York City Event: Beneath the giant Climate Clock in Union Square we will gather to witness the clock ticking down at 12PM ET, and launch into action in solidarity with actions across the world. The event will feature speakers from frontlines communities impacted by climate change, Summer of Heat on Wall St, NY City Council, Climate Clock and more.
- Campaign Launch: A groundbreaking report will be released, Climate Criminals, which will publicly unveil five of the biggest ‘enemies of the Earth’ - individuals who are ‘wanted’ for abusing their positions of power to accelerate the climate crisis.
- RSVP for the event on theSummer of Heat webpage
Backed by 350.org, Sunrise Project, Oil and Gas Action Network, Hip Hop Caucus, We Don’t Have Time, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change — with new partners joining every week — this day will be marked by synchronised climate campaigns, actions and events across the globe to press government, political and business leaders to #ActInTime before it's too late.
Last year, Climate Emergency Day witnessed a powerful global mobilization with synchronized actions in 30 countries across 5 continents. From the iconic light projection on Christ the Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro to the dozens of actions by grassroots partners, to the 500+ campaigners and youth activists from across the world trained to leverage the clock in their local campaigns. The Day served as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for progress on vital climate solutions.
The message reverberated loud and clear: We are in a climate emergency. We must #ActInTime to rapidly implement bold solutions.
