Since 1974, West Coast Environmental Law has worked to transform the legal landscape – improving access to environmental justice in BC and working alongside partners and allies to develop innovative legal solutions grounded in Indigenous and Canadian law.

About the Andrew Thompson Award: 50 Years of Changemakers for Environmental Justice

The Andrew Thompson Award was established in 2002 by West Coast and the Thompson family as a legacy to Dr. Andrew Thompson, a ground-breaking BC environmental lawyer who was one of West Coast’s first directors. In celebration of West Coast’s 50th anniversary year (2024-25), West Coast has honoured a number of individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to environmental protection and sustainability in British Columbia though the law with the Andrew Thompson Award.

Nominate a Youth Changemaker for Environmental Justice

Nominations are now open for the final stage of this process, which will focus on youth changemakers for environmental justice.

Do you know a young person between the ages of 16-35:

  • who has made important contributions to environmental justice in BC?
  • who has a vision for how strong Canadian and/or Indigenous laws could contribute to ecological and community resilience in BC over the next 50 years?

Please submit a nomination by completing this online form before April 30, 2025.

Successful nominees will:

  • Have the opportunity to travel to Vancouver and participate in Envisioning the Future of Environmental Law: The Next 50 Years – a facilitated dialogue session among selected youth changemakers (expenses paid) on Monday, May 12, 2025;
  • Have their contributions to the session published by the West Coast Environmental Law Research Foundation; and
  • Have a chance to meet other youth changemakers for environmental justice and engage with environmental and Indigenous rights lawyers.

Nominees need not be law students or lawyers, though nominations of legally trained people are welcome.

Submit your nomination today!
